Strength training for bendy people
You will learn general concepts for functional strength training including progression, rate of perceived exertion, pacing, and considerations for rep schemes. We will explore four main categories of exercise relevant for daily life: squatting, lifting, pushing, and pulling.Â
Exercises will be modifiable for various ability levels and forms of resistance, and will take into account the unique needs of the hypermobile body.
What to Expect:
Building capacity is a long term project, especially for the bendy body. Here's a quick overview of our approach:

Why strength training?
Here's why I recommend resistance/strength training for bendy people:
Joint Stability
Learning how to progress from bodyweight exercises can help build greater stability in hypermobile joints. Most hypermobile people under-load their joints due to fear, lack of training, and exercise intolerance. In this program, I will support you to find the right level of training for your current condition. You will start right where you are, and progress from there at your own pace.
Body Awareness
Resistance offers tactile feedback, which can improve proprioception (awareness of body position), as well as our ability to control our movements. This is crucial for individuals with hypermobility as they may have difficulties with coordination and motor control. The best antidote is slow movement with external feedback such as the floor, wall, and yes - resistance.
Confidence
Strength training does more than just support our muscles and joints. It has the potential to radically transform the way we perceive ourselves and our potential. For those of us who've been taught to fear and distrust our bodies by well-meaning professionals, the confidence that comes from resistance training (when approached wisely), is priceless.
Progressive
Resistance bands are a perfect first step if you're just getting into resistance training. Dumbbells represent a next step, offering a bit more challenge as you continue to progress. Finally, barbell training allows experienced participants to continue to progress to heavier loads. If you have been focused on bodyweight exercise, these various forms of resistance can help you to overcome training plateaus and learn how strong you truly are.
Versatile
Resistance bands and dumbbells can be used for a wide range of exercises, targeting a variety of muscle groups and movement patterns.
In this program, there will be options for most of the exercises to be performed while lying on the ground for those who get dizzy easily or have POTS (common among folks with hypermobility syndromes).
Customizable
Resistance bands, dumbbells, and even barbells come in various weight increments, allowing you to gradually increase the intensity as you get stronger. This is important for people with hypermobility who usually need to start with lighter resistance and progress by small increments to avoid overexertion. This also helps beginners gradually build strength and avoid overtraining.
Have a question?

When are the live sessions again?
We'll meet every Monday and Wednesday from 11:00am-12:15pm Eastern Time inside our course platform (similar to Zoom).Â
What if I can't attend the sessions live?
All sessions will be recorded and uploaded to our course platform within 30 minutes of when we finish. While it's helpful to attend live when possible in order to receive individual feedback, it is not required in order to benefit from the classes.
What if I have a specific question that doesn't fit into class time?Â
Dr. Libby will hold monthly live (and recorded) Q&A sessions open to all Bendy & Badass members, where you can come with your questions or submit them in advance for her to answer. Even if you can't attend live, you can replay the recording at your convenience. In addition, Libby offers 1:1 virtual consultation sessions which you can schedule as needed here: SCHEDULE A 1:1 SESSION WITH LIBBYÂ
Note: these take place outside the Bendy & Badass course platform, and fees for these sessions are charged separately.
What equipment will I need?
You will need a set of resistance bands, ideally with a variety of resistance levels. Long bands and loop bands are both recommended. You'll also need some dumbbell sets (two of each weight). You can choose which weights you start with. Start low if you're new to resistance training! Lastly, you'll need at least one set of therapy balls for self-massage. You'll receive more details after you register.
What if I've never done any strength training before?
This program is open to all levels. Each exercise can be progressed or regressed by increasing or decreasing weights and increasing or decreasing stability. Since POTS (postural orthopedic tachycardia syndrome) is common in people with hypermobility, most exercises in this series will include options to perform them from the ground (an example of increasing stability).
What if I am afraid of injury or struggle with exercise intolerance?
The trainer for this series is a Dr of Physical Therapy who specializes in treating hypermobility and has experience in helping clients overcome exercise intolerance. As part of the program, you will learn how to use tracking tools to study exercise tolerance and exercise recovery after each session. There may be a bit of trial and error as you learn your body's signals, but you'll be supported and guided with expertise every step of the way.
